Keith Winter writes:

“Some sad news. David Cank’s wife telephoned me this morning, (16/01/2024) to say that David passed away last night and would I tell the Wakeman people. He had heart and lungs problems and had been ill for a while. No other details at present.”

David will be fondly remembered. He appeared in our website when he joined us at events. (Cricket club. Middle row 2nd from left next to Mr. Williams.)

Annual Dinner Autumn 2022

The first intake of students to the Shrewsbury Technical High School was in September 1957. Several who remember the occasion well, gathered at the Bunch of Grapes pub in Shrewsbury in 2022 for the annual reunion dinner. The event was kindly organised by Keith Winter. We shared a drink or two together, enjoyed the company, the food and the occasion. We couldn’t stop talking but as the rays of the setting sun cast longer shadows over Oxon, time ran out. Thank you Keith. (CD editor)

Memories of the big matches won have retreated into the mists of time.

I (editor) was never any good at cricket and appear centre front in this photograph as Maths teacher Mr F.I. Williams pressed me into the role of scorer – to help improve my maths.

Shrewsbury Technical High School Reunion 2022 Meeting Dates

In September 1957, Shrewsbury Technical High School opened. Two classes, H1 and H1a were launched – sharing the accommodation with students of the technical college and separate college of art and design. All in the same building alongside the river Severn by the English Bridge in Abbey Foregate. A remarkable number of class H1 members have stayed in touch. Some H1a members have been in touch but we welcome contact from anyone with an interest. E-mail can be forwarded to those who agree. News items are invaluable, please send to :

Sixty-fourth Birthday Party 2020

On Saturday the 19th September 2020, as many of us as were able met online to celebrate the start of our 65th year as a group. And we still meet regularly online.

Sign up for the next session by contacting Keith winter (details below) :

We are successfully meeting using ZOOM video-conferencing. Saves getting stopped at the border or being quarantined.

On Saturday 16th May 2020, 9 of us met digitally. It was a welcome relief being able to chat across the ether without having to journey to Shrewsbury and back. For some a five minute walk for others several days across Europe.

It gave Roy Weaver from Cambridgeshire the opportunity to update with his news and for John Avery and Barbara to join from Anglesey. Chris and Rosemary Davison were in Hampshire just visiting from Austria at the beginning of March and finding themselves in 12 week lock-down. Not perfect timing said Chris. We all exchanged tales of how good we felt and Jenny with Julian reminded us how supportive our health system had been over the years. Discussion tailed off onto Brexit and ….

John remarked how good it was to see Roy and that it was their first visual encounter since school days.

Thanks to Keith for setting up the technology which was simple to use.

On 27th June 2020 we met virtually once more. A really good turnout this time, adding Rosemary Hemming. Our August meeting included John Cartwright and John Hunter. Good to interact with so many old friends.

Join us for the next meeting. To obtain virtual joining details, please contact Keith Winter (his details at foot of page).

Editor’s recommendation. Download the Zoom App for your device and take a test drive before our meetings. It’s easy to operate and the help files minimise panic searching for microphone or camera controls. CD.

Reunion 56 Years On

Students from one of the original two forms at the Shrewsbury Technical High School year of 57 were guests of two former teachers on Saturday 6th July 2013. Some fifty-six years on from the first meeting in their classroom, in what is now known as the Wakeman, students chatted over coffee in a sundrenched Church Stretton, Shropshire garden and shared memories as if they were yesterday. Science teacher Mr David Higgins and Maths and H1 form teacher Mr F I Williams with their wives kept the group in order – just.

The ex-pupils enjoyed a mid-day meal together in a local hotel. The planned hill walking for the afternoon did’t take place as the day had “moved on.”

Ditton Priors School

Shrewsbury Technical High School was created in 1957.
In many ways it was a visionary move to create opportunities for pupils from outlying areas of rural Shropshire; as well as the county town.
For my part it was an exciting voyage of discovery, an opportunity to reach unbelievable horizons. Alongside traditional academic subjects we were offered a palette of learning with eye-opening variety, delivered by a dedicated group of teachers. Now in our mid seventies, the original stock meeting together over a cup of coffee from time to time, often reminisce about our mentors who weren’t that much older than us at the time.
Sat at my desk on the side of an Austrian mountain in 2019, at the end of a long career in the arts, I could never have anticipated speaking fluently the German language we were taught by Mr Ibram. At the age of 11 we thought it was incase there was another war.
Here is an old photograph taken in Ditton Priors school 1957 just before Myself (Chris Davison l.) and John Cartwright (r) moved on to Shrewsbury Technical High School to continue growing up in an exciting world.
Ditton, in those days, had bus services to Bridgnorth and Ludlow. Shrewsbury had a bus link on Tuesdays (market day) : a Corvedal Motors service driven by Mr George Childs. (I remember the telephone number on the back of the green and cream coach : Ludlow 23.) John Cartwright and I became residents of Nearwell Hostel in Abbey Foregate along with other students from South Shropshire.
How times have changed. Taking advantage of freedom of movement as members of the European Union, I now travel to Innsbruck from Gatwick in 1hr 20 mins for €40 and carry out a lucrative business as a matter of right. As the UK has decided to withdraw from EU wide treaties, sadly things will change.
